Yes, I dumped Gnome quite some time ago. I've been running XFCE. It looks like you
are converting your original Gnome/Default Fedora install. I've just been installing
the XFCE spin provided by Fedora or Centos.

A glimpse of reality every now and then is nice.

$ sudo dnf install @xfce-desktop-environment
$ sudo systemctl disable gdm
$ sudo systemctl enable lightdm
$ systemctl reboot
Have to pick the xsession at start, menu in the upper right corner, then
log in, right click settings to change desktop image.
