IMHO for a variety of reasons, a lot of people left the work force. This caused the labor
pool to reach further down the bell shaped curve to find willing participants.
Unfortunately, the complexity of the world, which in my opinion is too complex or perhaps
overly complex or perhaps more complex than it needs to be, remained the same.
As a result, many even moderately complex things are breaking. Like for example chess on
Linux. I just spent most of my afternoon installing various chess programs, they
don't really work. Some don't work at all. Some sort of work, but have various
sort of major features that don't work. Gnome-chess works. But I can beat it easily.
I haven't played for a while, and I'm not that good. It says I can install
another engine. But it fails to tell me how and if I go out to Google, the features that
it documents don't actually exit on the actual app.
Actually brutalchess might work too. It has no man page and no menu of any kind. There is
no documentation of any kind on the web page, but there is a forum and a mailing lists.
You just move and it starts playing. It seems like it makes pretty good moves, but the
display is hard for me to see and I can't change it.

Granted, enthusiasm for chess has wained somewhat. Sigh.
I'm just glad I don't have any brain surgery scheduled in the near future.
I doubt if people are going to get smarter or perhaps less careless, overnight. But
perhaps the world will simplify a bid. Eventually. That would be a good thing IMHO.

At the risk of going into the weeds, GUchess is a text based command line program. It
should really be used with a chess board so you can keep track of the positions. xboard
is supposed to be a graphical front end for GNUchess. It supports other "chess
engines" such as, apparently, fairymax. Even though I have configured it to not use
fairymax and to use GNUchess, it still gives me an error that fairymax is not installed.
Everything looks fine, until a make a move as white to start the game. Black never
responds.
I considered installing fairymax, but apparently itis not part of the distro.
Different programs have different problems. But none of them, except perhaps gnome-chess,
actually provides a chess game experience. I should just be able to dnf install blah and
then type blah at the command line and be able to play chess, like I could 10 years ago.
I used xboard then, mostly.

Interesting idea. A lot of folks have tried and their unanswered questions litter the
Internet. It seem that the gnuchess -u flag doesn't work. I think this is probably
how it is run when being used as an engine and explains why xboard has issues. It is
unfortunate that there is no documentation. Perhaps the right way to do it is to get the
source and read it and build it better or at least learn how to use it.
I might do that, but a less robust but perhaps functional solution could be obtained by
using xdotools and piping the output to a file and tailing that. While gnuchess will sort
of take input from a named pipe, it goes berserk if that pipe is empty, instead of
blocking and waiting. I could also wrap it in Java or perhaps C and use the native
interfaces, but I dont think that will actually work without a functioning -u flag on
gnuchess.
But for now, I have a nice old chess board that I bought in Mexico when I was a kid. With
that, and the gnuchess command line, I have a pretty nice experience. As long as I
remember to enter my move. When you get into the game, its easy to forget LOL. And, it
kicks my butt, the way it should be.

Interesting. Didn't work for me. I ran 2 ways: with ./ removed and cd to /usr/bin
which is where xboard and gnuchess live. Board displays, timer starts, nothing happens.
In one instance white moved it's knight and then nothing else happened. When I use
the command just above the one you used in the documentation, which should let me play
against the engine, the board appears and I can make a move as white and then nothing
happens.
Good to know that you could get it to work. What distro are you using? Maybe I should
get source and just build gnuchess and xboard. Also, I have room on a laptop to install
another distro, maybe Ubuntu, and see if that works better. I've been wondering about
Fedora. Among other things, I had install issues that I don't think I should have
had.
I'd be glad to show you how to play chess.

Thanks. It works on 38, which is what I have installed on my laptop.
I had been using mostly 36. I have two other systems on 23 and 25 too, but I don't
use these for games or entertainment.
I'm not sure why I should have issues on 36 and not on 38, but it works just fine. on
38 on the laptop. The straight xboard command doesn't work, but the one in the docs
does. It just kicked my butt again, but it was fun.
I tried a few simple things on 38 that didn't work before I moved to 36 and the couch
to figure things out. I have my entertainment system in the living room. I'm not
sure if it is worth figuring out the issue since I can easily use the physical board in my
living room and I have a nice option now to play on my laptop if I am away from home. Or
even if I am in the living room.
What also works on 38 is that if I launch xboard just using "xboard" and then go
to options and select gnuchess as the first engine, it works. This doesn't work on
36.

Maybe I'll uninstall and reinstall and see what happens. It sure looks like something
is corrupted.
It is sort of weird that no matter how you search you seem to get just different
references to the same man page. Which is kind of funky with its somewhat bizarre local
references and the like. I guess I should have put more faith in it or something.
I'm not sureif I have to take back all the nasty things I said, but maybe LOL.

Fedora. Among other things, I had install issues that I don't think I should have
had.
I'd be glad to show you how to play chess.

their unanswered questions litter the Internet. It seem that the gnuchess -u flag
doesn't work. I think this is probably how it is run when being used as an engine and
explains why xboard has issues. It is unfortunate that there is no documentation.
Perhaps the right way to do it is to get the source and read it and build it better or at
least learn how to use it.
I might do that, but a less robust but perhaps functional solution could be obtained by
using xdotools and piping the output to a file and tailing that. While gnuchess will sort
of take input from a named pipe, it goes berserk if that pipe is empty, instead of
blocking and waiting. I could also wrap it in Java or perhaps C and use the native
interfaces, but I dont think that will actually work without a functioning -u flag on
gnuchess.
But for now, I have a nice old chess board that I bought in Mexico when I was a kid.
With that, and the gnuchess command line, I have a pretty nice experience. As long as I
remember to enter my move. When you get into the game, its easy to forget LOL. And, it
kicks my butt, the way it should be.

I ran Fedora for a while until an version upgrade trashed my grub2 (ack, foo) setup.
Rather than dive into grub arcana, I backed up my files and installed OpenBSD. Lesson
learned! Be wary of upgrades, do a full backup first.

I trashed my system before too! I think I stopped the install in the middle. I still have
yet to recover it! Maybe rather than hack on old Pentium II systems, I ought to restore my
